How to Write an Article

How does someone sit down and write an article that other people would want to read? The question seems a tough one to answer but it is actually not as difficult as you may believe it is. The following are the steps that will guide you to write great articles that people will enjoy reading.

Pick a theme. Before you start writing anything, you need to have an idea regarding what you want to write about. Will the article be about airplanes, cars, cats, fruit, making pumpkin pie, how to survive being jilted, hip tattoo designs? You need to find out what you want to write about. Once you have managed to choose a subject, you can then narrow things down and be more specific.

Do some market research. After you have found your topic of choice, you need to find out how many people would be interested in the same thing. If you are thinking about writing an article on cars, you need to know what people are most interested to know about cars. You can do this by checking the some blogs or forums on cars and see what people are talking about these days. You can also ask friends and family.

Make a keyword search. Now that you have narrowed things down considerably, you need to find the best words that will make the most impact to your target market. You can do this by checking out Google Adword’s Keyword Tool. You can access it even if you do not have a Google account. It helps you find which words you can use as keywords in your article. The keywords with the most number of searches will be the most popular.

Choose the specific topic for your article. Once you have your keywords, you can now start brainstorming about topics to write about. The keyword search would have already given you a clue about what specific things people are looking for.  Start by jotting down all the words or ideas that pop into your head based on the keywords. Play around with the keywords and see what happens.

Decide on a title. After you have your list of topics which are based on the keywords and all the other words that you have written down while brainstorming, you need to form a title for your article. Write some titles down and try to see which ones you really like. The most common ones are those with the words “How To”, lists like “Top 20” or “Best of”.

Start writing your article. Once you have chosen a title, you can now proceed to write your article. Start with the body of the article first. The body will give you an idea about what the introductory paragraph should be. If you are writing a list, you can build your article by writing a paragraph about each item on your list. Do not make your paragraphs too lengthy as it may appear difficult to read. A paragraph of 4 – 5 sentences will be enough. If you are having problems about the style of writing you should do, try browsing through similar articles on the internet. However, you must never, never, never copy an article that has been written or published by someone else and claim it as your own. That is plagiarism and will get you in trouble. The best way is to read an article that you like and then write in your own words. Copying someone else’s work is unethical. Think about how you would feel if someone stole your hard work and claimed that it was their own?

Introduce and conclude your article. After you have written the body of tour article, you need to write an introduction and a conclusion. This can be fairly simple. All you need to do is write about what you are about to tell the readers – that is the introduction. Then you tell the reader – that is the body of the article. And, finally, you remind the reader about what you have just told them – that is the conclusion of your article. So, it is:

Introduction:       Tell them what you will be telling them
 Body:                  Tell them.
Conclusion:         Tell them what you have just told them.

Edit your article. After you have written the article, you need to edit it and make sure that there are no typographical errors, spelling mistakes, and the grammar is good. If you have given any facts or figures, you need to make sure that the information is correct and reliable.

Read your article. Read the edited article in full. Slowly. Re-read it. Re-read it again. Make sure you are happy with your work. If you feel that the article is okay and that there are no mistakes or errors in it, then you can go ahead and post it.

Post your article. Post the article on your website, blog or submit it to an article directory. You are now ready to for publishing your article to the world.
