Book Review: Gifts of the Blood

Gifts of the Blood (The Angel's Edge, #1)
Gifts of the Blood by Vicki Keire
My rating: 4 of 5 stars

I received a copy of this book via NetGalley in exchange for my unbiased and honest review.

Gifts of the Blood is about Caspia who is a young girl struggling with staying in school, working a job, and caring for her ailing elder brother, Logan, who has cancer. They are orphans and have only each other so it is very hard for Caspia to imagine how her life will be without her brother.

Caspia is learning to be an artist and she already has a wonderful talent to draw. She also has a gift -- she can illustrate or draw the future. She will soon learn that her gift is mainly due to her Nephilim heritage. She is descended from Caspia who is a woman that was loves by a fallen angel named Asheroth. Asheroth has been watching all Caspia's descendants for a very long time and is now watching Caspia.

However, because Logan is dying, his guardian angel, Ethaniel is close by. It is while watching Logan that Ethan falls in love with Caspia and becomes a fallen angel himself.

Because the brother and sister are descendants of Nephilim, their souls are very special which makes them attractive to many who have angelic blood from the Dark Realms -- especially Logan as he is dying.

The book is an interesting read. In the story, the author defines the Nephilim as Fallen Angels and not as what is commonly accepted; that they are children of humans and angels. There are very few light moments as Caspia's burden is truly difficult to bear. Her only family left is dying of cancer and she finds out that she is descended from fallen angels.

I enjoyed reading the book although there are times when I got so sick and tired of Caspia's histrionics. However, she does manage to hold it together enough for me to keep reading -- which is a good thing :)
