Book Review: Winners

Winners
Winners by Danielle Steel
My rating: 1 of 5 stars

It has been a long time since I have read a book written by Danielle Steel. I picked this one to give myself a change from all the books I have been reading.

The story is about a young girl named Lily Thomas. She is a very good skier who is training as part of the Olympic team. As she was to go to ski, the chairlift that she was sitting in broke and she fell. She suffered from a complete severing of her spine which left her unable to use her legs. Her father is unable to accept the fact that she can no longer ski and has scheduled appointments with the most renowned experts he could find. But there is no way for Lily to walk again and she has to learn how to manage her living her life from a wheelchair.

There are many things that I did not particularly like about the book. For one thing, the whole story is told so dryly. There is just nothing there except Danielle telling this and telling that. The flow is clipped and rather lifeless. Another thing is that I saw the way it would end -- as in who ends up with who -- within the first few chapters. Things are just way so obvious that imagination is not needed at all... no siree.

If I could give it less than a star, I would.

My Favorite Things: F is for Flowers

Gladiola
My Dad considers himself as a retired farmer... oops, the word around here is "agriculturist." His father and his father's father tilled the land. But Dad loves playing with dirt (hehehe) so he can't keep his hands off it for very long. Only this time, he is more into vegetables, fruits and, my favorite, flowers. :)

Yellow Colored Rose
Sago Palm
We have three small gardens at home and that is where Dad spends most of his "feeling like pottering around" time. Among the flowers that he lovingly nurtures, are roses.

Pink Colored Rose
Sampaguita

We do not have so many fancy varieties nor do we know their scientific names or what they are called. All we know is that they are roses and that we love them when they are in bloom. Dad also has other flowering plants among his "babies."

Rain Lily
Dama de Noche
Among them are the rain lily, gladiola, kiss-me-not, sampaguita and the dama-de-noche (lady of the night)

Crown of Thorns or Kiss Me Not
Flowers, therefore, are among my most favorite things :)
